GCSE Chinese Study Groups

‘I have been impressed with the teachers as well as the resources and the fun way in which the Mandarin curriculum has been delivered to our pupils. The seamless integration in the curriculum, the detailed feedback on pupils’ progress and performance and the quality of the resources used are important factors in the success of Mandarin at our school…’

Tanja Russell, Head of MFL at Kingston Grammar School

GCSE Chinese Study Groups

An after-school course designed for young, aspiring linguists. The course takes beginners on a rich, educational journey over 3 years, including a study trip to China at the end of the second year. Students sit GCSE Mandarin Chinese at the end of the course.

The GCSE Mandarin Chinese study groups have been set up to meet growing demand for Chinese lessons from secondary school students for whom it is not an option as part of their school curriculum. More and more people are now recognising Mandarin Chinese as an important skill to develop for 21st Century employability and to gain a competitive edge academically.

If  you would like us to visit your school to this exciting initiative in more detail, please contact us.

We have designed a curriculum that is progressive and well structured, as well as a lot of fun. The study centres offer small-group teaching, which enables students to form long-lasting relationships with their teacher and classmates. Small groups are also optimal for practising using the new language.

The GCSE in Mandarin Chinese should take roughly 200 hours of teaching. The study centres course has split these hours as follows:

  • Year 1: 60 hours in weekly 2-hour classes (term time)
  • Year 2: 60 hours in weekly 2-hour classes (term time) & 20 hours as part of study trip to Beijing (summer)
  • Year 3: 60 hours in weekly 2-hour classes (term time)

Students can expect a challenging and stimulating learning experience from the course. They will be encouraged to develop a working application of Mandarin Chinese and learn about the Chinese culture and customs that are inextricably linked to the language itself.

The teacher of the group will remain with the same students throughout the course, and accompany the group on their study trip to Beijing. The trip balances classroom study with real life language exercises and excursions to the best parts of the Chinese capital. Dragons in Europe has a trusted and experienced partner in China who helps run the itineraries. The trip is carefully assessed to ensure the safety and security of all members of the group. Full support and advice will be given to parents before departure.
